5 Things To Do This Week to Resist from the IL-9

Add Your Name for a Clean Dream Act

The language the president used last week while meeting with lawmakers to discuss immigration has pulled attention away from the necessity of passing a clean Dream Act—legislation that would allow DACA recipients (individuals who entered the United States as minors and have been authorized to live, study, and work in this country) to stay here legally and without imminent threat of deportation. Democrats have said that they won’t support a spending bill without a clean Dream Act, but many conservatives are balking at including this legislation in the spending bill that must come by January 19 or the government will shut down. Add your signature to this petition from United We Dream to show just how many Americans believe the Dream Act is a necessity for the success and humanity of our nation.

Grab Your Sign and Get Marching

This Saturday, January 20, the Women’s March Chicago will be leading the March to the Polls, a massive demonstration a year after the 2017 Women’s March (with events happening all weekend across the country). This march is an opportunity to show that women and their allies are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to political activity in this country. Make a sign, grab your pussyhat from the Women’s March in 2017, and head downtown. Find out more here.

Support Young Democrats

College Democrats of Illinois has set a goal to #UnseatTheSeven—that is, to elect progressive candidates in the seven Illinois Congressional districts where sitting Republican officials voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act and have continued to support the president’s agenda at the expense of the health and wellbeing of Illinoisans. Find out more about the work the College Democrats of Illinois is doing to mobilize many of the youngest voters in the state, then give some funding to their PAC. Their work is vital to the efforts to remove Bruce Rauner from the governor’s mansion in Illinois, too.

Get Informed About Running for Office

We’ve all heard about the influx of people—in particular women, people of color, and transgender men and women—considering running for public office. If you’re female-identified and have felt a calling to find out more about what it would mean for you to run for office, sign up for an upcoming webinar on the topic from EMILY’s List and Run to Win. The webinar, which will take place Monday, January 22, from 6-7:30 p.m., will cover the basics of running for office. Sign up here.

Speak Up and Fight Hate

It’s still the season for setting goals for the new year, and learning strategies to respond to bigoted language and actively dismantle systems of hate is an important opportunity available to all of us. Take a look at two excellent resources from the Southern Poverty Law Center: Speak Up: Responding to Everyday Bigotry, a guide that includes realistic responses to that awful thing your family member, friend, or coworker says; and Ten Ways to Fight Hate: A Community Response Guide, which outlines concrete strategies for acting in a manner that tears down hate and supports the victims of hateful rhetoric, actions, and legislation. Share with your friends.

5 Things To Do This Week to Resist from the IL-9

Choose Your Health Plan—And Remind Others to Sign Up, Too

It’s time! It’s now open enrollment for those seeking health coverage under the Affordable Care Act. That means it’s time to change or add coverage for yourself and your family, and also to make sure all your friends and neighbors know it’s time to enroll, too. In the past few months, the current administration has done plenty to try to undermine signups; but that tactic isn’t working, and the ACA website is seeing record enrollments. Visit the Get America Covered project’s website for resources and support to make sure all your friends and family know that enrollment lasts through December 15.

Indivisible Illinois is also organizing daily phone banking to alert Illinois residents to the Affordable Care Act enrollment period. Whether you’ve got just a few minutes of your own to spare or can gather groups of friends to make calls together, sign up to participate in the phone bank. You’ll be doing your part to ensure everyone in Illinois who needs health insurance through the ACA is able to choose their coverage during open enrollment.

Add Your Name

We’re now less than a year from the 2018 midterm elections, which means organizations of every ilk are gearing up to help the voting public be as informed as possible on issues important to them and our country. The March for Science, which organized massive nationwide demonstrations this past April in favor of science and science policy, has just launched their initiative looking toward November 2018: Vote for Science. It’s early stages for this initiative, which aims to get Americans more engaged in advocating and voting for science policy. Add your name by taking their pledge, and stay tuned for more actions and resources from this group.

Boots on the Ground

While we in the Illinois-9 enjoy representation by progressive officials, our neighbors who are represented by Peter Roskam aren’t as lucky. Roskam, a conservative Republican who is in favor of the proposed tax plan that would adversely affect millions of Illinoisans, will be speaking at a major GOP fundraiser in Downers Grove on Thursday—and residents from the Illinois-9 will be showing up to join our neighbors in protest. Protesters will demonstrate on Thursday, November 16, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at Ashyana Banquets in Downers Grove.

In another bid to help get more progressive candidates on the ballot, volunteers through North Suburban Democrats will be circulating petitions in Arlington Heights this weekend to help Mark Walker, currently Wheeling Township committeeman, to get on the ballot for State Representative. Sign up here and plan to help out on Sunday, November 19, at 10:30 a.m.

Get Democrats on the Ballot in November!

Wheeling Township's own committeeman Mark Walker is running for State Representative and he needs our help to get on the ballot!

Folks, this is crucial: this is the last major weekend petition circulation event of the year and we need to make sure that all of our Democratic candidates in Arlington Heights get on the ballot!
