5 Things To Do This Week to Resist from the IL-9

Choose Your Health Plan—And Remind Others to Sign Up, Too

It’s time! It’s now open enrollment for those seeking health coverage under the Affordable Care Act. That means it’s time to change or add coverage for yourself and your family, and also to make sure all your friends and neighbors know it’s time to enroll, too. In the past few months, the current administration has done plenty to try to undermine signups; but that tactic isn’t working, and the ACA website is seeing record enrollments. Visit the Get America Covered project’s website for resources and support to make sure all your friends and family know that enrollment lasts through December 15.

Indivisible Illinois is also organizing daily phone banking to alert Illinois residents to the Affordable Care Act enrollment period. Whether you’ve got just a few minutes of your own to spare or can gather groups of friends to make calls together, sign up to participate in the phone bank. You’ll be doing your part to ensure everyone in Illinois who needs health insurance through the ACA is able to choose their coverage during open enrollment.

Add Your Name

We’re now less than a year from the 2018 midterm elections, which means organizations of every ilk are gearing up to help the voting public be as informed as possible on issues important to them and our country. The March for Science, which organized massive nationwide demonstrations this past April in favor of science and science policy, has just launched their initiative looking toward November 2018: Vote for Science. It’s early stages for this initiative, which aims to get Americans more engaged in advocating and voting for science policy. Add your name by taking their pledge, and stay tuned for more actions and resources from this group.

Boots on the Ground

While we in the Illinois-9 enjoy representation by progressive officials, our neighbors who are represented by Peter Roskam aren’t as lucky. Roskam, a conservative Republican who is in favor of the proposed tax plan that would adversely affect millions of Illinoisans, will be speaking at a major GOP fundraiser in Downers Grove on Thursday—and residents from the Illinois-9 will be showing up to join our neighbors in protest. Protesters will demonstrate on Thursday, November 16, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at Ashyana Banquets in Downers Grove.

In another bid to help get more progressive candidates on the ballot, volunteers through North Suburban Democrats will be circulating petitions in Arlington Heights this weekend to help Mark Walker, currently Wheeling Township committeeman, to get on the ballot for State Representative. Sign up here and plan to help out on Sunday, November 19, at 10:30 a.m.

Get Democrats on the Ballot in November!

Wheeling Township's own committeeman Mark Walker is running for State Representative and he needs our help to get on the ballot!

Folks, this is crucial: this is the last major weekend petition circulation event of the year and we need to make sure that all of our Democratic candidates in Arlington Heights get on the ballot!

Sign up to join us this weekend!

5 Things To Do This Week to Resist from the IL-9

Raise Your Consciousness

Have you been looking for local resources related to health care, Medicare, employment, veterans affairs, and financial wellness? Make plans to attend the Helping Hands Community Resource fair on Saturday, November 4, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Niles West High School. Organizations and experts from across the community will be at the event to provide resources and guidance on topics important to Illinoisans’ lives. Find more information here.

Be Prepared

With the indictments of Manafort and Gates stemming from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, and the president’s regularly-tweeted dislike of these actions, groups across the country are preparing for the possibility that the president will try to fire Mueller in the same way he did former FBI Director James Comey. While signs don’t currently point toward such a firing, we know that the president’s mood changes on a whim. Add your name to the Indivisible Chicago Rapid Response Team so that you’re ready to stand against presidential overreach in the event of a Mueller firing.

And while you’re at it, keep yourself up to speed on the Mueller investigation and all its players and implications. This tool from the Washington Post is great for understanding the scope of what’s going on.

Ongoing Autumn Actions

It’s time! It’s now open enrollment for those seeking health coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Visit the Get America Covered project’s website for resources and support to make sure all your friends and family know that enrollment lasts November 1 through December 15.

Now through November 15, volunteers will be calling Illinois registered voters to encourage them to contact Governor Rauner and insist that his Family Foundation cease distributing false information aimed at denying climate change. Governor Rauner’s Family Foundation has distributed scientifically inaccurate information to over 200,000 teachers across the country, negatively impacting students. Sign up here to phone bank on any upcoming Tuesday or Wednesday evening.

5 Things To Do This Week to Resist from the IL-9

Jump in the Ring

We know the adage that politics begins at home, and much of the resistance since the 2016 presidential election has demonstrated just how important local, grassroots actions are to our political momentum. If you’ve been toying with the idea of jumping into the political ring yourself, consider the Illinois Democratic Party’s call for individuals interested in serving as Democratic Precinct Committeemen. Express your interest by filling out this online form.

Raise Your Consciousness

Do you have an interest in equal rights for men and women? An interest in the as-yet-unpassed Equal Rights Amendment? Plan to check out the free screening of the award-winning documentary Equal Means Equal, followed by a panel discussion, on Sunday, October 29, from 1-4 p.m. at Niles West High School. Claim your free seats here.

Now that we’re about halfway between the 2016 presidential election that spurred the resistance and the 2018 mid-term election, it’s a good time for a reminder on ways to stay engaged without falling into a spiral of despair at everything new news story. Take a few minutes to read (or re-read) this essay from lawyer and activist Mirah Curzer, “How to #StayOutraged Without Losing Your Mind.” The piece is full of important reminders of ways to constructively tune in, productively tune out, and take care of ourselves and each other.

Ongoing Autumn Actions

In the past few months, the current administration has done all of the following to sabotage the Affordable Care Act: pull funding from the ACA’s advertising budget; announce that they’ll be taking down the ACA website for so-called maintenance every Sunday but one during open enrollment; and end subsidies that stabilize insurance marketplaces. All of these moves serve to make it harder for the people who rely on the ACA for their health insurance to actually access coverage. Health reporters with the Washington Post estimate these tactics may keep over 1 million Americans from accessing the health coverage they need. We cannot let this tactic work. Join the thunderclap to remind members in your community of the upcoming 2018 ACA signup dates via your social media platforms and make sure all your friends and family know that enrollment lasts November 1 through December 15.

Raise Your Voice

July 12 is the Day of Action for Net Neutrality. Use your online platform and network to spread the word about the negative impact the elimination of net neutrality would have on the internet and its users—all for the profit of cable companies.

On Friday and Saturday, concerned citizens—many of them women—will be marching from the NRA headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia, to the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., to demand the NRA remove and apologize for propagandistic videos seeming to advocate for the use of firearms against liberal Americans. If you’re supportive of this action from afar, take a look at the #NRA2DOJ social media support toolkit to find out how you can lend your voice to this weekend’s march.

Boots on the Ground

On Tuesday, July 18, at 12 p.m., the Illinois Health Care Covenant will take place at Chicago Temple. This non-denominational event is meant to demonstrate the broad support of Chicago and Illinois communities for comprehensive health coverage—and to speak out against the current Senate health care bill. Attendees will gather in support of a commitment to ensuring all who need health care may access it, and will demand that Governor Rauner insist the same for all the people in Illinois he is sworn to represent.

Add Your Name

You’ve heard about the president’s Election Integrity Commission—a ploy to get states to turn over private voter data to the current administration. This is data Republicans can use to keep people of color and others from voting. The ACLU has filed suit against the president demanding transparency from the commission to ensure every American is able to exercise their right to vote. Add your name to a petition in support of the lawsuit and stand up for voter rights.

Stay Informed

Looking for ways to stay informed on the dates and candidates of every upcoming election? Take a few minutes to learn about, then download, the new EveryElection app for iOS, which will alert you to all the voting information for your area and for other contacts in your network.
